Publication Design- Why I Adore The Night

About the project
For this project I created a publication design for the short story "Why I adore The Night" or "Darkness is a time to think, to dream, to love..." written by Jeanette Winterson. The design was inspired by the modern art movement "expressionism". The centre-fold was to be carefully considered as it was to be one of the primary features of the publication. The design features light photography to further illustrate the expressionist movement and the story of how darkness is a time to think, to dream and to love.
The photography tells a story of a dreaming girl that  falls in-love with light, however their love can only be visible during the night.
Expressionism
When reading "why I adore the night" i felt a strong sense of emotion from Jeanette Winterson's writing which I wanted to portray in the publication. I chose the expressionist art movement because of how its main trait is to distort reality to evoke an emotional effect.
The grid used in the publication was a modular grid due to working with photography as well as typography. The modular grid was also chosen because I wanted to add a modern aspect due to the art movement being  modern. The body copy is 10 point size, 95% black and aligned to the left hand margin. The emphasised type follows a different rule by being 12 point size, a light grey and aligned to the right hand margin to help it stand out. The type and imagery have negative white spaces around it to give the design more breathing room and so that the user does not touch the type to create a pleasant reading experience.

The centre-fold has two images printed on transparent paper with a quote from the short story behind the images, when the transparent pages are pressed flat the woman looks as if she is grabbing the quotes but when the page is released the quotes fade away and only the imagery can be seen.

The pages in the publication are chosen to have a soft texture with a pure white to contrast the black type, this was done to mimic the soft tone of voice that the type and imagery have. The book is in black and white which fits the expressionist movement, however there is a tonal change in the photography and the typography.

The publication has a soft tone of voice that shows a loving and gentle nature, this relates to the story about loving the night.
